Prof Serajul Islam, 2 others sued in Chittagong for defaming Bangabandhu

The court is set to hold the first hearing next Sunday

A case has been filed against Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury and two others in Chittagong for allegedly making disrespectful remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in an article.

A man named Nazim Uddin Sujon, 60, filed the case at the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Hossain Mohammad Reza on Tuesday.

The other two accused in the case are Rashed Rouf, a Bangla Academy Literary Award winning novelist and associate editor of Daily Azadi, and writer Nesar Ahmed.

After taking the case into cognizance, the court set next Sunday for the first hearing.

A book titled “Father of the Nation” was published by Chittagong Academy on March 17, 2020, marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu. The case was filed for defaming Bangabandhu in an article, titled “Secret enemy of Sheikh Mujib” and written by Prof Choudhury, in the book.According to the case statement, the article by the renowned academician reads: “Sheikh Mujib before 1971 and Sheikh Mujib after 1971 is not one and the same; it’s an unpleasant truth.” While another line reads: “Moral decline ushers in his physical downfall” (Noitik Poton-e Tar Doihik Poton Deke Aane).

The plaintiff says he has gone to court as a politically concerned citizen because the article defamed Bangabandhu in several lines.

Meanwhile, accused Rashed Rouf said the plaintiff must have had an ulterior motive for filing the case. “He [Nazim Uddin] presented only two lines from the article differently.

“The book’s author, Prof Serajul Islam, has written about these issues in many articles before,” he said.

“I have no idea why I was made an accused in this case. I have written essays, columns, rhymes, etc. during difficult times of Awami League and am still doing it. Such a case is very disgraceful for me,” Rouf added.
